We use competition—and the pursuit of winning—as a method to challenge, refine and develop the character of everyone involved.
Winning is not the problem. Making winning the ultimate is. At the same time, refusing to care about winning removes the point of competition. At Illinois Legends, character development is our core objective. This mindset changes how we approach every failure, every challenge and every success.
Where We Lose Perspective
Missing the Mark
Three common mindsets can keep youth sports from becoming the developmental experience it should be.
The Obsesser
Becoming overly concerned with the score, team division, statistics or a child’s status encourages constant comparison. When results become everything, kids may begin cutting corners in both character and player development just to get the outcome they want.
The Pacifist
In reaction to those who go over the top, it can be tempting to check out and stop caring. But kids need engaged, supportive adults who help them process the full range of experiences youth sports provides—not adults who simply accept mediocrity from a distance.
The Consumer
Families naturally want the best experience at the best price and location. But a club cannot simply cater to every preference and still lead well. Character develops through challenge, honest conflict and strong—but gracious—leadership that calls players and families toward their best.
The Legends Way
Hitting the Mark
We must leave behind an obsession with winning because it is a faulty foundation for kids. We must also resist passivity, which leads to mediocrity and disinterest, and abandon consumerism, which turns kids and families into critics instead of leaders.
Creating a great experience requires families to engage in the process and teach kids the true value of sports. The value is not simply what we can get for ourselves—it is who we become through the process and how we learn to treat others.

The Family
We take a family approach at Legends. Our door is open to everyone, but this is also our house. We are not a business, hotel or restaurant built around the preferences of one family or player—we are a team, and the right attitude is everything.
Learning to handle conflict, failure, disappointment and success—while continuing to pursue excellence—is where the true victories are found. We modeled the Legends culture after a family because it is one of the strongest environments for character development.
When players eventually hang up their boots, they cannot carry youth trophies into everyday life. They can carry their character. We hope you will join the Illinois Legends family and help us create a life-changing experience for your kids and your entire family.

The Legends training method puts individual skill development ahead of team results. We build complete, confident players by choosing long-term growth over short-term comfort.
Skill Over
Standing
We place an extreme focus on individual technique—dribbling, finishing and decision-making—over team results or club standing. A child’s development as both a player and a person matters more than any youth win.
Play Through
Pressure
We do not prompt players to kick the ball out of bounds simply to relieve pressure. We prioritize technical ability, composure and tactical awareness over easy, comfortable play.
Every Position,
Every Player
Every player learns every position during the season. As ability grows, tactical instruction is delivered from every area of the field. Mistakes are not punished with the bench—only a lack of focus or effort is.

From the streets of Eswatini to the fields of Southern Illinois, Jeff Wardlaw has dedicated his life to developing players, building teams and creating meaningful soccer experiences for families.

Jeff Wardlaw
Southern Illinois HappyFeet / Legends
Jeff was born and raised in Swaziland—now Eswatini—before moving to the Kansas City area in 1985. The beautiful game has been part of his life from the beginning: playing in the streets of Africa, competing in club soccer in Kansas City, completing a four-year collegiate playing career and continuing to play after college.
For more than 20 years, Jeff has coached collegiate soccer at Greenville University across both the men’s and women’s programs. During his tenure, he has led multiple teams to NCAA Tournament appearances and captured multiple SLIAC regular-season and tournament championships.
Jeff became the owner of Southern Illinois HappyFeet/Legends in 2010. For more than 15 years, HappyFeet—“Soccer Fun for Your Little One”—has served preschools throughout the Metro East, alongside the HappyFeet and Future Legends recreational leagues.
In 2024, Jeff launched Illinois Legends Soccer Club as the premier competitive side of the organization—creating a clear pathway for players to grow from their first introduction to the sport into confident, skilled and character-driven competitors.
A New Soccer Chapter
Moved from Eswatini to the Kansas City area and continued his development through club and collegiate soccer.
Collegiate Leadership
Coaching men’s and women’s soccer at Greenville University, with NCAA appearances and multiple SLIAC titles.
HappyFeet / Legends
Became owner and expanded youth soccer opportunities for children and families throughout the Metro East.
Illinois Legends SC
Founded the organization’s premier club program with player development and character at its core.
